Eye Love: Blepharoplasty and What to Know

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid lift surgery, involves correcting sagging skin or droopy eyelids and undereye bags.  Upper eyelid surgery involves removal of excess skin and a small amount of fat to upper eyelid.  Lower eyelid surgery involves removal of creepy skin and fat to under eyes.  These incisions are hidden in natural crease to the upper eye and at the lash line to under eyes. Stitches are placed and removed 1 week following surgery.  Most people are back to running errands at 7-10 days and back to social events at 3 weeks. And resuming physical activity at 3 weeks following blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty is an excellent way to address deeper problems with the eyelid tissues, including loose, redundant skin and fat displacement. Upper blepharoplasty is designed to remove lax, saggy eyelid skin that can be heavy and sometimes droop over the lash line, restricting peripheral vision. Upper blepharoplasty can also reposition displaced fat and lift the eyelid skin to create wider, more youthful looking eyes.

Blepharoplasty in Nashville, TN

Lower blepharoplasty is intended to smooth out under-eye bags and puffiness, areas of depression beneath the lower eyelids and excess wrinkles in the lower eyelids. However, the procedure cannot improve the appearance of wrinkles around the corners of the eye, which are known as “crow’s feet.” This is where medical grade chemical peels and neurotoxins like Botox®, Dysport® and Jeuveau® can be tremendously helpful.

Having these procedures performed by themselves or combined can give a more youthful and brighter looking eyes. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, blepharoplasty is the 4th most performed procedure in plastic surgery.  At your initial consultation, Dr. Robbins and you can discuss if a blepharoplasty (upper and/or lower) are right for you.  Check out Dr. Robbins’ amazing eye work at www.robbinsplasticsurgery.com.

The Truth About Gynecomastia or Man Boobs

Gynecomastia in Nashville, TNGynecomastia affects approximately 50-60% of male adolescents.  This commonly can occur during puberty where there is an overproduction of estrogen.  Gynecomastia can cause low self esteem and shame especially during puberty.  However, gynecomastia can affect boys, adolescents and men.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is initially triggered by a shift in hormonal imbalance by an increase in estrogen or a decrease in testosterone.  Many boys or men may experience tenderness to their breast.

How is gynecomastia corrected?

Gynecomastia surgery is performed through a small incision at the base of the areola.  This incision is hidden and concealed so that it is not visible at the beach or pool.  The gland is removed through the small incision and liposuction is performed as well.  The liposuction helps to contour the chest.

What should you expect from recovery from gynecomastia?

Expect some soreness for a few days following the surgery.  A compression shirt will be worn for approximately 6 weeks following surgery.  This can be hidden under shirts during that time.  Working out can be resumed after 3 weeks following surgery.

Unfortunately, working out and dieting does not improve gynecomastia.  Many patients say they notice it more after losing weight.  You do not have to live with the embarrassing and uncomfortable affects of gynecomastia.  Voted Nashville’s Best Nip & Tuck Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Chad Robbins, can help you lead a happier life.  It is not too late to call for a consultation today with board certified Dr. Chad Robbins and start living your best life.

The Benefits of Chin Implants and Chin Augmentation

Chin Augmentation in Nashville, TNChin augmentation or chin implants are a popular cosmetic surgery option for individuals who feel that their chin is not as defined or lacks proportion to the rest of their face. The following are a few of the reasons why patients choose for chin implants:

  • to correct a weak or recessed chin,
  • to increase the prominence of the chin bone to reduce the appearance of a double chin,
  • to improve jawline and neck definition, or
  • to bring the chin into proportion with the other facial features for a more balanced appearance.

A chin implant itself is made from a durable material, usually silicone that is molded around the natural bone to provide the desired amount of enhancement. Implants come in a wide range of contours and sizes to suit any patient.

What to Expect During a Chin Augmentation Procedure

Chin augmentation is normally performed as an outpatient surgery using local or general anesthesia. The implant, which is made from a silicone material, is inserted through an incision made inside of the mouth to keep the scar as invisible as possible. Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed with sutures, and a bandage is placed over the chin. If chin augmentation is the only procedure being performed, the surgery can be completed in about an hour.

The Recovery Process

It is important to follow the Dr. Chad Robbins’ aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and to prevent complications. Patients are normally able to return to most activities within a week of their surgery; however, strenuous activity should be avoided for 3 weeks. There will be some swelling and minimal bruising immediately following the surgery; however, most of the swelling should subside within a month to reveal the results.

When looking for a Nashville board-certified plastic facial surgeon to perform a chin augmentation, it is important to look for a surgeon like Dr. Chad Robbins with extensive experience involving chin implants and who will take the time to help you find the implant that will provide the most natural results.

But as a reminder, aside from painful sunburn, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime (according to the Skin Cancer Foundation). Always remember to apply sunscreen not only days when it is sunny, but on days when it is cloudy and raining.  We can get sun exposure through our car windows each day, so it is always important to wear sunscreen no matter what each day.

But do not forget about your lips and scalp.  If you have ever had a scalp burn, we know you feel us here. Hello, faux dandruff.  And our lips can burn just as easily as anywhere else on our body.  It is important to wear an SPF chapstick or lipstick to protect them while in the sun.

For the scalp, we love the easy application of a spray sunscreen. You can also use a mineral powder SPF.

  1. Keep Eye Cream in the Refrigerator:

There is nothing more refreshing than a cooling eye cream straight from your refrigerator. You can also try cooling your moisturizer, masks, or any other creams for the face or body.

Our favorite products to stay cool:  Revision DEJ eye cream or Robbins Plastic Surgery Brightening Pads as well as Robbins Plastic Surgery Thirst Quencher

We love the unflavored collagen powders that can be added to water or coffee.

Scarring After a Tummy Tuck

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is one of the top 5 most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery or ASPS, there were 1.8 million cosmetic surgeries performed, 130,081 of those were tummy tuck surgeries.  A tummy tuck is an ideal procedure for people who have excess skin to the tummy area.  It can also address separation of the abdominal muscles that have separated after pregnancy or weight fluctuations.

The scars for a tummy tuck are hidden in bathing suits and underwear.  Incisions for a tummy tuck most commonly extend from hip bone to hip bone as well as a small incision inside the belly button. This allows your surgeon to remove all the tissue below and just above the belly button. Any stretch marks in that area will be removed as well. The belly button is brought out through a new opening but stays in its original place on the abdominal wall.  Liposuction is part of your procedure of a tummy tuck.  This is performed through your tummy tuck incision.

It is important to follow aftercare recommendations so that your incision heals with the best scar possible. Steri-strips or paper tape are placed at the time of surgery to improve scarring for the first three weeks. You may transition to a scar cream after three weeks following a tummy tuck.

It will be important to keep your incision out of the direct sun and use sunscreen for the first several months after surgery to help your scar heal to its best potential. It will take a full year for the scar to completely fade.

Dr. Chad Robbins spends time with each patient interested in a tummy tuck.  This allows him to customize his approach to optimum results.  Check out these amazing before and after pictures of tummy tucks performed by Dr. Chad Robbins.

The Benefits of a Thigh Lift

A thigh lift or thighplasty refers to reshaping the thighs by removing excess skin and fat to reveal a more flattering and toned leg.  It is similar to an arm lift.  Check out our blog on arm lift here.   Liposuction is performed in conjunction with a thigh lift when performed by Dr. Chad Robbins. By adding liposuction this helps to achieve a more toned appearance of the leg.  Many choose to have a thigh lift at the time of an arm lift and some choose to do them separately.

Thigh Lift in Nashville, TN

The scars for a thigh lift are hidden in the groin crease.  However, some patients may require a scar that not only is hidden in the groin crease but extends down the inner thigh.  At your consultation, it would be determined after your exam what type of scarring would give you the best results.

Following surgery, you are required to wear compression garments for 6 weeks after surgery.  You may shower 3 days after your surgery. And you may resume full physical activity after 3 weeks.  However, you will be up walking the day of surgery.  Many are back to work after 2 weeks following a thigh lift. Stitches following a thigh lift are dissolvable and do not need to be removed.

The results of a thigh lift are seen almost immediately, however, it does take a few months for the swelling to subside to really see the optimal results.  Check out these before and after results of thigh lifts by Dr. Chad Robbins.  Dr. Chad Robbins is highly trained in all aspects of plastic surgery. Say Goodbye to the Arms You Don’t Love: The Facts About an Arm Lift

Whose arms do you most covet?  Michelle Obama?  Jennifer Aniston?  They both have incredible definition and sculpted arms that we all desire.  Check out the following statistics on arm lifts and how to achieve those desired Hollywood arms.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) released additional statistical information on their annual survey of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures performed in 2018 year. They found that the arm lift or brachioplasty is becoming a much more common procedure than it has been previously. This is mostly due to weight loss surgery. Aside from wanting a tummy tuck or breast lift after massive weight loss, an arm lift is a very popular procedure that many weight loss patients are seeking.  There were 17,338 arm lifts performed in 2018 according to the ASPS.  That is a 5,030% increase from the year 2000.

Arm Lift in Nashville, TN

But before patients get an arm lift, they need to understand that there may be other options. If you don’t have a great deal of excess skin but mostly fat to the upper arms, you may be a candidate for liposuction which requires a very small scar. Unfortunately, most patients that are unhappy with their upper arms is usually due to what they call “bat wings” – the excess floppy skin that is not corrected by liposuction alone. Therefore, they must consider an arm lift, or removal of the excess arm skin. And if removal of the skin is needed, then you must recognize that you will have scars.  An arm lift scar is made in the back inner part of the arm.  Through this incision excess drooping and excess skin are removed and the remaining skin is tightened.  Liposuction is performed in conjunction with an arm lift to contour and tailor the arm to the elbow.  This gives an excellent aesthetic outcome of the arm by combining skin removal and liposuction.

During your recovery of an arm lift, compression garments are placed to minimize swelling.  These compression garments are worn for 6 weeks following arm lift surgery.  Patients may return to regular physical activity after 3 weeks of arm lift surgery.
