Mommy Makeover-Breast Implants and Tummy Tuck

A mommy makeover is a popular term referring to improve the appearance of breast and tummy.  A mommy makeover typically involves placing breast implants and/or a lift or mastopexy and an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck performed at the same time.  The mommy makeover refers typically to women of childbearing years who are looking to restore their pre-pregnancy appearance.    Many women become unhappy with their appearance after pregnancy despite diet and exercise.  A mommy makeover can make you feel more confident and like yourself prior to pregnancy.

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck typically involves tightening abdominal muscles, removing excess skin and fat to the abdomen as well as liposuction to your love handles.  A pain pump is placed at the time of surgery for patients at Robbins Plastic Surgery.  A pain pump drips numbing medicine into your abdominal muscles after they are tightened for the first 3 days.  This makes a big difference for patients in their level of comfort following surgery.  The incision from a tummy tuck is hidden and not visible when wearing bathing suits and underwear.  You will wear a compression binder for 6 weeks following surgery.  This can be hidden under clothes when you are out and about after surgery.

A breast augmentation is the placement of silicone or saline breast implants to improve volume and shape to the breast.  Typically, the implants are placed under the pectoral muscle to achieve a more natural look.  The incisions are hidden in the crease of the breast are not visible in a bathing suit or bra.  Some women who have had children and breastfed require a lift or mastopexy to improve the appearance of the breast.  A lift or mastopexy can require longer scars that are not visible in bathing suits or bras.

You will want to wait until after you are finished having children and breastfeeding before proceeding with a mommy makeover.  This will give you the optimum results by waiting until family planning has been completed.  Following a mommy makeover, you will not be able to lift over 8 pounds or perform any strenuous or vigorous activity for the first 3 weeks.  You may resume normal activities after the first 3 weeks.  Most patients are taking pain medication for the first week and then following that are taking over the counter pain medication.  You will need help with children for the first week following surgery as most patients are not able to lift or drive the first week. Then after the first week most people are resuming activities are, they can tolerate.

A mommy makeover, when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon can give you lasting and rewarding outcome.  It is always important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon when deciding to have a mommy makeover.  Dr. Chad Robbins is a board-certified plastic surgeon who trained at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  Be sure to review before and after pictures of mommy makeover before choosing a plastic surgeon for you.  Call Robbins Plastic Surgery today at (615) 401-9454 to schedule a consultation to see if a mommy makeover is right for you!

How Do I Know If I Need a Lift?

Breast Lift in Nashville TN

That’s a question many of us ask when we start our breast enhancement journey.  How do I know if I need a lift? At Robbins Plastic Surgery we want to educate you on a breast lift and answer your most commonly asked questions.  So, let’s start with what a breast lift means and what it entails.

Breast Lift in Nashville TNA breast lift or mastopexy refers to lifting the breast tissue and nipples and areolas back to the right position.  A breast lift or mastopexy can be performed with or without a breast implant.  (Check out our other blogs on the different breast implants available on the market.)  Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging can all play a part in the position of our breasts.

Here are some most commonly asked questions about a breast lift or mastopexy:

What do the scars look like for a lift?

The scars for a breast lift or mastopexy can vary depending on the individual and how droopy the breasts are prior to surgery. The scars may be around just the areola which is called a periareolar lift.  This is needed in someone who is just a little droopy and needs the nipples and areola brought back to the right position. If someone is truly droopy and a periareolar lift is not enough to get the nipples and areolas in the right position again then an anchor scar may be required.  This is where an incision is made underneath the breast in the crease, a vertical incision and around the areola. This technique allows for a full lift of the breast.

How long will the scars be present?

Scars start off pinkish/red in color initially.  These will fade as time goes if they are not exposed to the sun. This process of fading takes several months.  Using a silicone-based scar cream, Biocorneum will help speed up and improve this process of fading.

Can I get an implant placed at the same time as a breast lift?

Yes, you can absolutely have an implant placed at the same time as a breast lift.

How long does a breast lift take?

The surgery takes approximately 2-2 ½ hours.

Do I go home the same day as my surgery or do I have to stay the night in the hospital?

After having a breast lift, you will go home the same day.

What is recovery like after a breast lift?

You may shower after 3 days following a breast lift.  Then you will wear a sports/compression bra for 6 weeks following your surgery.  You will be up walking after your surgery.

When can I go back to working out at the gym after a lift?

You may return to the gym after 3 weeks and will have no restrictions following your breast lift.

When can I return to work?

If you work a desk job, you may return after 10-14 days.  However, if you have a physically demanding job you may want to wait until 3 weeks following your surgery.

Do I Really Need a Lift?

Breast Lift in Nashville, TN

A mastopexy or the more commonly used term is a breast lift, is performed to improve the appearance of breasts. Today there is so much talk of breast augmentation that many think that this is the only way to enhance your breasts. However, you can enhance the volume of your breasts with a breast augmentation, reverse sagging with a breast lift or mastopexy or have an augmentation/implants placed as well as a breast lift at the same time.

Breast Lift in Nashville, TN

A mastopexy or breast lift can sound a little scary at first especially when most are apprehensive about scars.  A breast augmentation or placement of implants does not address sagging breasts that can occur after pregnancy, nursing, weight fluctuations, and gravity can all play a part in sagging of the breasts. A breast lift addresses sagging, droopy and at times can address asymmetries by rearranging natural breast tissue to give a more youthful appearance. A breast lift doesn’t give more fullness to the breasts, however adding a breast implant can help add fullness.

There are a couple of different ways a breast lift can be performed. One technique is by making an incision around the areola, as known as a peri areolar lift and lifting the areola to a more youthful appearance. This is only possible if a women’s breasts are only a little bit droopy. A breast implant can be placed at the same time as a peri areolar lift. Incisions are concealed along the edge of the areola.

Another technique is what’s called a wise pattern mastopexy. This is required when breasts are saggy and droopy. By using this technique of a wise pattern technique breasts are perkier and more youthful in appearance.
