Are Mammograms Necessary After Breast Implants?

Most definitely!  Routine physician exams, at-home self-breast exams and regular mammograms are all very important and should be continued after your breast augmentation.  You should continue your self-breast exams

Be “In-The-Know” about Mammograms after Your Breast Augmentation

Breast Implants can make it difficult for the technician to see certain areas of the breast tissue during a mammogram.  Here are some important and helpful tips for you when scheduling your next mammogram:

  • Inform the imaging center that you have implants when scheduling your mammogram
  • Inform the technician you have implants before the imaging begins
  • Extra images (a technique called implant displacement) of your breast will be taken
  • Inform your doctor if you notice any changes

Implant displacement is often easiest on women with implants that are placed sub-muscular and can be uncomfortable during the mammogram, especially on women with capsular contracture.

Is it true that a mammogram can rupture my implant?

The chances of a mammogram rupturing your implant are extremely rare and the value of a mammogram is much greater than the risk of rupture.  Be sure to follow the tips above and inform the facility and technician of your implants prior to scheduling and taking breast images.

After breast augmentation, your breasts will feel different therefore it’s important to familiarize yourself of what is now the new normal.  Ask your doctor about self exams and finding your implants.  Remember, you know your breast better than anyone!  Notify your doctor of any changes.
