What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, one of the most popular types of cosmetic surgery, is better known simply as “breast implants.” It is self-explanatory and is the type of cosmetic surgery procedure a woman seeks when she wishes to have larger and/or firmer breasts with more volume.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

  • More feminine figure
  • Bigger breasts for women who have always been small-breasted
  • Restores self-confidence and self-esteem
  • More youthful appearance due to more firmness in the breasts

How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

When Dr. Robbins performs a breast augmentation procedure on a patient, he first requires her to receive general anesthesia, so she feels no pain and very minimal discomfort once the procedure begins. When he performs the surgery, he will make an incision, usually around the areola or by the armpit, and place silicone or saline breast implants either under or over the pectoral muscle, known as submuscular or subglandular. The doctor generally prefers the submuscular procedure as it results in a much more natural appearance in the breasts. However, he will discuss the options with the patient to come up with the best solution.

Once the breast augmentation procedure is complete, the patient will feel sore for several days. It may be necessary to take a few days off from work and take an over-the-counter painkiller such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen for relief. However, shortly after a breast augmentation, many women can return to their regular everyday lives and activities.
