What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the term used for excessive growth of male breast tissue. It can be caused by hormonal problems, genes, organ dysfunction and the use of steroids or certain medications. Many men with gynecomastia attempt to eliminate it on their own, but this is rarely successful. The safest, most permanent treatment for the condition is male breast reduction surgery.

The Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

There are several key benefits to receiving male breast reduction surgery. These include:

  • Improved self-confidence
  • Greater availability of clothing options
  • Improved comfort during physical activity
  • A more masculine figure

How Is Male Breast Reduction Performed?

To perform male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Robbins places the patient under general anesthesia. Incisions are made in key locations to allow for the removal of excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin. Liposuction may be performed in conjunction with the surgery in order to achieve optimal results. Afterward, the incisions are cleaned, sutured and bandaged. If scarring occurs, it is usually minor and will fade gradually with time.
