What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breast tissue in men and young boys swells and becomes enlarged, often resembling female breasts. Although gynecomastia can indicate underlying problems, the Mayo Clinic reports that it is typically caused by normal hormonal changes in the body. When testosterone levels drop, the amount of estrogen present increases and causes swelling in the breast tissue. This often occurs in infants, pubescent boys and older men who are experiencing natural hormonal shifts.

Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

The condition sometimes resolves itself without medical intervention but is often treated surgically. Surgical intervention provides immediate relief in cases where the breast tissue has become tender or painful and for those who find the condition embarrassing and socially debilitating.

How is Male Breast Reduction Performed?

In male breast reduction, liposuction is used when possible to remove fatty tissue in the breasts. When liposuction alone is inadequate, the surgeon will remove breast gland tissue. To do so, he makes an incision around the areola or under the arm in an attempt to keep later scarring discrete. He removes excess breast tissue, sculpting and shaping as he goes to leave a natural contour behind. He closes the wound so healing can begin.
