Facelift and Achieving Stunning Results

Do you look in the mirror these days and think who is this person? If the signs of aging are taking a toll on your confidence, then a facelift may be right for you. Those with unwanted wrinkles, jowling to lower face, and sagging skin often opt for a facelift to achieve a more youthful and refreshed look. Deciding to have a facelift is not one to be taken lightly. After reading this blog you should feel better and more informed about the realities of a facelift.

A facelift does not mean that you are going to look “windblown” or overdone. Many struggle with self-esteem with aging especially when the signs of aging become more noticeable. Scars are placed behind the ear as well as in front of the ears. These scars are hidden and concealed so that it is not obvious that you have had a facelift. By having a facelift, it will remove and tighten sagging skin, enhance and define facial features as well as minimize fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to a facelift many people need fat grafting to cheeks, lips and nasolabial folds. As these areas age we lose volume and in order to plump these areas fat is injected to improve volume loss. Fat grafting is needed it is recommended at the time of a facelift in order to maximize your results.

A facelift is an outpatient surgery meaning you go home the same day as your surgery. You return the following day to have a compression wrap removed. Following that for the first week you will wear a compression neck garment to aid with swelling while you are at home. At your one week visit you will have sutures removed in front of the ears and will return at 2 weeks to have the remaining sutures removed behind the ears. You may resume physical activity at 3 weeks and return to social events at 3 weeks. However, you will be out and about prior to the 3 weeks’ time. You will be up walking after surgery, just no heavy lifting or strenuous activity.

Addendum to BI-ALCL Blog from May 15, 2019

UPDATE: Recently, in the news the FDA released that they are recalling Allegan brand textured breast saline and silicone implants as well as textured tissue expanders. The FDA stated, “our analysis demonstrates that the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan BIOCELL textured implants is approximately six times the risk of BIA-ALCL with textured implants from other manufacturers marketing in the U.S.” At Robbins Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chad Robbins exclusively uses Mentor brand breast implants and does not use Allergan brand breast implants. According to the FDA there were 573 reported cases of BI-ALCL and of those 481 were Allergan brand breast implants. The FDA has not recommended that people that already have textured implants have them removed if they are not having any symptoms or problems. The use of textured implants is much more common in Europe and Asia versus in the United States. Check out this recent article about BI-ALCL and the recall of Allergan breast implants.

#Newtox is On the Market

#Newtox is the latest botulinum toxin type A called Jeuveau® (pronounced Jū-vō). Jeuveau® is inspired by the French word “nouveau” which means new. In February 2019, Jeuveau® gained FDA approval and is the 4^th product on the market to improve fine lines and wrinkles. It is for cosmetic use only. Jeuveau® is manufactured by a California based company called Evolus.

So, what does Jeuveau® do? Jeuveau® is injected into the muscle to relax and temporarily improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the glabella or 11’s area between the eyebrows. If you’ve had Botox or Dysport® before then your treatment with Jeuveau® will be very similar. It is structurally very similar to Botox.

How is Jeuveau® going to compete with Botox? Jeuveau® is designed to be just like Botox but a little better. FDA required clinical trials of Jeuveau® and it performed as well if not better than Botox during the trials.

There is no downtime with Jeuveau® treatments (just like with Botox® and Dysport®) and you can go about your busy life after your treatment.

Is this Jeuveau® better than Botox? Time will tell with whether it lasts longer and kicks in quicker than Botox. The clinical trials did show favorable feedback from patients.

Eyelid Surgery: Does It Really Make A Difference?

Do you have hanging skin above or under the eyes or bags under the eyes? Have you tried every cream and tightener on the market with no change of the bags or excess skin? Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty was the fourth most popular surgery in 2016 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Eyelid or blepharoplasty surgery removes excess skin and fat to give a more rested and youthful appearance. Upper eyelid surgery focuses on removing excess skin to upper eyes. The scar is placed in the crease of the upper eyelid. Lower eyelid surgery involves removing excess skin and fat to the lower eyelid to help address “bags” under the eyes. The scars for lower eyelid surgery are hidden at the base of the eyelid where your eyeliner is placed. The upper blepharoplasty or lower blepharoplasty surgery can be performed together or separately depending on your needs to achieve the best aesthetic outcome.

You will have stitches following upper and lower blepharoplasty surgery that stay in place for 1 week. You can have bruising and swelling that can be present for 7-10 days following surgery. You can return to work at approximately 7-10 days following upper and lower blepharoplasty.

How Do I Know If I Need a Lift?

That’s a question many of us ask when we start our breast enhancement journey. How do I know if I need a lift? At Robbins Plastic Surgery we want to educate you on a breast lift and answer your most commonly asked questions. So, let’s start with what a breast lift means and what it entails.

A breast lift or mastopexy refers to lifting the breast tissue and nipples and areolas back to the right position. A breast lift or mastopexy can be performed with or without a breast implant. (Check out our other blogs on the different breast implants available on the market.) Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging can all play a part in the position of our breasts.

Here are some most commonly asked questions about a breast lift or mastopexy:

What do the scars look like for a lift?

The scars for a breast lift or mastopexy can vary depending on the individual and how droopy the breasts are prior to surgery. The scars may be around just the areola which is called a periareolar lift. This is needed in someone who is just a little droopy and needs the nipples and areola brought back to the right position. If someone is truly droopy and a periareolar lift is not enough to get the nipples and areolas in the right position again then an anchor scar may be required. This is where an incision is made underneath the breast in the crease, a vertical incision and around the areola. This technique allows for a full lift of the breast.

How long will the scars be present?

Scars start off pinkish/red in color initially. These will fade as time goes if they are not exposed to the sun. This process of fading takes several months. Using a silicone-based scar cream, Biocorneum will help speed up and improve this process of fading.

Can I get an implant placed at the same time as a breast lift?

Yes, you can absolutely have an implant placed at the same time as a breast lift.

How long does a breast lift take?

The surgery takes approximately 2-2 ½ hours.

Do I go home the same day as my surgery or do I have to stay the night in the hospital?

After having a breast lift, you will go home the same day.

What is recovery like after a breast lift?

You may shower after 3 days following a breast lift. Then you will wear a sports/compression bra for 6 weeks following your surgery. You will be up walking after your surgery.

When can I go back to working out at the gym after a lift?

You may return to the gym after 3 weeks and will have no restrictions following your breast lift.

When can I return to work?

If you work a desk job, you may return after 10-14 days. However, if you have a physically demanding job you may want to wait until 3 weeks following your surgery.

Breast Augmentation in Nashville, TN

Breast augmentation or a “boob job” is the most popular plastic surgery performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery or ASPS. A breast augmentation restores volume to your breast with typically an implant. Breast implants are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been since 1976 and were introduced to the US in 1962. There are few different types of breast implants on the market today. There are saline breast implants, silicone breast implants as well as ‘gummy bear’ or shaped silicone implants available today.

Saline breast implants are filled with salt water. If a saline implant is to leak, then it would deflate, and the body would absorb the saline. The shape of saline implants is only round.

Silicone breast implants are made of silicone gel. These implants feel more like natural breast tissue versus saline breast implants. If silicone implant is to leak the gel remains within its shell. Silicone implants come in either round or shaped or gummy bear silicone implants. The gummy bear breast implants are made of silicone gel but are a little thicker feeling than the round silicone implants. The gummy bear implants are tapered at the top and a little fuller at the bottom more similar to a natural breast or tear drop.

All implants come in different widths, heights and projections. At your consultation with Dr. Chad Robbins he will measure to make sure the implant chosen for you fits your chest wall nicely to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Following your breast augmentation surgery, you will be wrapped in a bandage that will stay in place for 3 days. After removing the bandage, you may shower and then will wear a sports bra for 6 weeks following your surgery. You may resume normal physical activities after 3 weeks. Pain following surgery is worse the first 3 days, but then tends to subside as time goes on.

Is a Tummy Tuck Weight Loss Surgery?

Many people confuse a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty with weight loss surgery like gastric bypass, lap band or gastric sleeve surgery. Weight loss surgeries like these listed above are to help you lose weight. A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is surgery to remove the excess skin after you’ve lost the weight. So, with that being said, these surgeries do very different things in the end. Is the goal of a tummy tuck to lose weight?

No, tummy tuck or an abdominoplasty is not a weight loss surgery and the goal is not to help or kick start your weight loss journey. Being at your healthiest weight does lower your risk for complications following any surgery.

Plastic Surgery for Men

Plastic surgery has always been looked at as a primarily female dominated world. However, increasingly men have been more interested in plastic surgery and wanting to look youthful without an over done look. Here we’ll discuss a few procedures for men to help them achieve just that.

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery helps correct sagging, aging skin and fat to upper and lower eyelids to give a more youthful and rested appearance. This procedure can be done in combination with other procedures. You typically have stitches that are removed after 1 week. You will have bruising and swelling that subsides over the first week.

Facelift removes excess sagging skin and fat as well as tightens the muscles. Dr. Chad Robbins gives a natural approach to facelifts so that you do not look overdone or pulled too tight. Scars are hidden in the hairline to conceal. A facelift and a blepharoplasty can be combined to achieve a restful appearance without looking unnatural.

Gynecomastia is a procedure to remove male breast gland that can develop and doesn’t change with diet or exercise. An incision is made at the base of the areola to so that the scar is hidden and concealed. Through this small incision the gland is removed as well as liposuction to give a masculine contour to the chest.

Liposuction removes stubborn fat from areas such as abdomen or love handles. Through a small incision a cannula is inserted that removes the stubborn fat. Areas are temporarily swollen and bruised following liposuction. You must wear compression garments following liposuction, but can return to full physical activities after 3 weeks. And many return to work within the first week following the procedure.

Botox and Dysport are non surgical treatments that have no downtime. These neurotoxins are injected into a muscle like the forehead or muscles between the brows to decrease wrinkles. These products will not give you a frozen or unnatural look. They are temporary and only last approximately 3-4 months where you return for additional treatment.
